HARBORS
Wrangell Harbor Basin
The Wrangell Harbor Basin sits at the center of downtown, encircling Chief Shakes Island and the historic Shakes Tribal House, a culturally significant site and popular destination for visitors and residents alike. This active harbor basin supports a variety of vessel types with a mix of reserved stalls, transient moorage, and float infrastructure serving both commercial and recreational needs.
Facilities within the basin include Reliance Harbor, the Inner Harbor, Standard Oil Float, the Float Plane Dock, and the Fish & Game Float. Reliance Harbor, located just below the Harbor Office, provides 24-foot reserved stalls and transient dockage with access to sewer pump-out and loading zones. The Inner Harbor, one of the community’s earliest floating docks, is accessed through a narrow passage and offers reserved stalls for vessels under 40 feet. The Standard Oil Float sits near the boat launch and is well-suited for reserved moorage with convenient access to parking.
The Float Plane Dock, positioned at the north end of Reliance Harbor, supports local operators and charters with gear and passenger loading and unloading. The Fish & Game Float, just inside the breakwater, accommodates larger recreational boats, tenders, and agency vessels with reserved stalls ranging from 30 to 60 feet.
Moorage options within the basin include both reserved annual stalls (available by waitlist) and transient space when available. “Hot berthing” is permitted under certain conditions, and auxiliary vessels tied alongside are subject to transient fees. Due to limited capacity, especially for vessels over 30 feet, advance inquiry is encouraged.
Liveaboard vessels are allowed at designated floats with an approved setup and payment of a monthly residential user fee. Spaces are limited by float location and subject to a waitlist. Current location limits are: Shoemaker (6), Heritage (6), Fish & Game (4), Reliance (3), Standard Oil (1), and Inner Harbor (2). Vessels must meet sanitation requirements, and unauthorized liveaboard use may result in enforcement action.
